What is auto-expand and how does it work?

The Auto-Expand feature allows infrastructure to be added to scenarios beyond the time horizon of currently announced projects. In 19Q4base, the Auto-Expand feature begins in April 2023, April 2033, and April 2043 to target infrastructure expansions beyond currently announced projects. LNG projects and their feeder pipelines as well as zones in New York State are excluded from the Auto-Expand algorithm. Auto-Expand conditions (including usage of the feature) are completely adjustable.

Starting at the beginning time period, infrastructure that meets user specified economic hurdles are allowed to expand up to a percentage of their original capacity. Default values in 2025 are maximum expansion = 100%, minimum cost = $0.10, and rate multiple = 3.00. The maximum expansion value grows over time.
